Real meat makes cats happy, January 10, 2013

If I have to run to the store to get cat chow because we run out of this at home, my cats meow and get pissed off. I wondered why, so I ate a little bit of both. Cat chow tastes like cardboard. Purina One tastes like meat cereal. Apparently my cats can tell the difference too.

(For the record: neither taste great.)

Our cat was having problems with crystals – frequent urination, squatting and leaving little spots in all kind of unfortunate places around the house. The vet put her on an antibiotic and prescription food, which made the problem go away. Switched over to this to maintain, and it has done a great job. She likes it, and no more issues. Bonus – it’s WAY cheaper than the prescription food.

One of the better diets out there, March 29, 2013
    By
    Larraine (United States) –

Having worked in the veterinary field for many years (>25yrs), I’m not taken in by the “healthy food” fads of the last few years from brands that came from nowhere and don’t actually utilize a nutritionist to develop their diets and don’t actually put any real research into diet development.

Very few brands actually do the above, and Purina is a long standing company with a good history of actually doing the footwork to make a good diet that pets actually like. Back in the day, I used to home cook for my dog when commercial diets didn’t suit his GI tract. Since the 80’s, diets have gotten better, and so has my knowledge of them. I fed Purina ONE to my next dog, and he did fabulously on it. I’ve since started feeding some stray cats in my neighborhood, and this is the only diet they’ll eat that matches the protein, fat, and palatability of more expensive diets that I was no longer able to get at a discount to make it worth buying. I’ve tried feeding other diets, and it gets ignored. This gets eaten.

I feel better knowing that animals under my care (even the homeless ones) are getting a high quality diet they actually like from a company that has a good reputation that they care about keeping.
