My cat is 13-years-old. Just before I was offered this food to try for her, she got her first urinary tract infection, and it was a bad one. The timing seemed serendipitous. Because of that, along with the fact that this claims to contain no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives, I eagerly accepted the offer to sample and review this food. So my less than enthusiastic feeling here is partially my own fault. The claim of this being good for urinary health outweighed by typical diligence in reading labels.

The first ingredient in this food is water, and it is probably the most watery cat food I’ve tried. (Well, technically, that my cat has tried. I love her, but I’m not sampling her food.) I will say that my cat is normally quite finicky, and she does seem to love the taste of this food. She actually eats every bite, and would likely eat more if I gave it to her. I’m not sure how much of her appetite is due to the love of the taste and how much might be due to this food having a higher water content, therefore not being as filling. Either way, she does like it. And I assume the high water content is for urinary health.

My problem is with some of the additives in this food. Despite the claim of containing no artificial color, this does contain titanium dioxide. I suppose you could make the argument that titanium dioxide isn’t “artificial”, but it certainly is not healthy. I’m also not clear on the “chicken liver flavor” and “egg flavor”. Is the flavor artificial or real pieces of liver and egg? This also contains “soybean meal”, which is generally used as a filler in lower quality pet foods. It’s use is controversial and I normally avoid soy products (and all fillers) with the dog and cat food I purchase.

As for whether it works, that’s hard to judge in the short term. My cat has not had another urinary tract infection, but it’s impossible to say whether she would have with any other food.

To sum it up: My cat likes the taste and eats it without a problem. I’m just not crazy about some of the additives, and I expect better from a company known for quality pet food.

I must admit, I was reluctant to order this after reading the negative reviews. My two indoor cats, well they are picky. One is 18 years old with special needs and is blind and deaf. They are both rescues. They other is about 4 years old and was born a feral cat and has some behavior issues due to the first home she was placed in. I knew if she did not like it, no cat would probably like it.

I give them Science Diet dry food during the day. They eat canned food for ‘breakfast’ and they usually eat the Pro Plan UTI canned. I decided to feed this to them after they ate their regular meal so it was not a matter of them just being hungry. With their bellies already full, if they liked it, they would eat it.

I placed it on the floor a few hours after they ate. They devoured it! I could hear them smacking it. I did not think it was too watery at all. It has a pate consistency to it but not too watery. Lately they have been eating Nutro canned food as well and some of their food is more watery than this food. Before I could even check on them, one cat had cleared her bowl, the picky younger one. The other was still chowing down.

For me, this food is a winner. Knowing they already eat a UTI canned food makes me feel comfortable in giving this to them. Science Diet is a brand I trust and I have yet to try one that they do not like. I am happy with this food and would buy it again.

I have two elderly cats (one male, one female). I have been told by my vet that the male has crystals in his urine and needs to have special food. I cannot believe how hard it is to find food designed for elderly cats with urinary tract issues. I know it is a common problem. I have found only two products, this one and Purina Pro Plan Urinary Tract Formula. I’d prefer not to feed them the same food day after day and they get a small can of wet food split between them morning and night. Thankfully I found this product yesterday. I have been feeding the Purina product for a while now. People need to keep in mind that cats with this particular urinary issue need to have more water in their diet and less dry food. The water keeps the crystals from becoming more of an issue which can lead to serious health problems. The consistency of the food is spot on, watery and soft. Upon first opening it, it appears to be a solid pate but I soon learned that it wasn’t. My cats, who are also on a diet, didn’t stop for a split second to protest the food. It disappeared quickly. I also feed a special Urinary Tract formula of dry food but they only get 2 T of that each per day. Hopefully the next vet visit will show improvement.
