The Answer to my feline issues….., December 29, 2012
    By
    Alecat10 (Ontario) –

I have 2 large Maine Coons. My female has an allergy to fish and scratches wildly, & my male has problems with hairballs, which were life threatening!!I Could only find 2 brands of dry food with no fish to accomodate my girl. This is one of them!! As well, my boy is 28 pounds and it is has been difficult finding a food that will satisfy him because he grew so fast and is very large boned. My girl has stopped scratching completely after what seems like 1,000 food trials & Vet visits to determine the allergy. Testing revealed nothing!!! As well her eye lids were even inflamed from the allergic reaction to fish. No Vet has told me her allergy is to fish, it is simply through my own food trials and research. My boy has stopped whining for food and is much happier now. Hairballs don’t seem to be a problem any longer as the increased fiber moves the haiball throught the digestive system naturally. Despite my cats always being on high quality food, I am no longer cleaning gunk out of their eyes twice a day! They are 3 years old and it taken me this long to find the perfect food for their situations. I was constantly changing foods to fix things! I am only on my 3rd bag of Freedom…but so far so good! Also, both cats have noticeable increased energy, racing around the house etc..The litter box department has no issues whatsoever! In fact, the hair is indeed being pushed out via the higher fiber content, in their stool as I see it regularly, vs. getting stopped up in the digestive tract. The hair has to come out one way or the other! On previous foods it wasn’t coming out and causing huge health issues!!! I feed them wet and dry, because a diet of dry is not healthy espeically for males. The only only wet food they like that has no fish in it is Wellness! So they get both everyday! Hope this review can solve some problems for someone else BC we have been throught the ringer with allergies! They have never LOVED a dry food so much has Blue Freedom!!

Excellent product for cats with hairballs and constipation or obesity., November 28, 2012

    Hello,

I have done an extensive amount of research and have spoken to several vets regarding cat foods and the reason Blue Buffalo is an excellent food for cats with allergies, hairballs, constipation, and obesity because it has a high fiber content of 7% versus 3% in most foods. BB is adding cellulose and peas and potatoes because this cat food is supposed to help with hairballs and obesity of indoor cats. Unfortunatly, cats are obligate carnivores that have a very low thirst drive so they drink very little water and expect to get most of the water from thier foods. Since many cats are now on dry food diets they recieve 60% less water than they need fromt thier food! Hairballs and constipation often result from this and many cat food manufacturers are adding fibers like pea fiber, beet pulp, cellulose, and psyllium in hopes that the fibers will absorb some of the fluids in the food and help push the hair and poop out of the digestive tract quickly and painlessly. Without the fiber many indoor cats that overeat on the dry cat foods would have these problems. PLUS, fiber helps reduce appetite and keep cats full longer to keep them lean.

So Blue Buffalo is not cheaping out or producing a low quality product, they are simply trying to solve the problems listed on the bag. If you want a cat food with very little fiber and your cat does not have constipation or hairballs and drinks lots of water or eats mostly wet food, then I would recommend switching to the wilderness verson of Blue Buffalo Products. Those are much better for that and have yucca to reduce stool odor.

    Thanks!

So Happy with Blue Buffalo!, January 8, 2014
    By

A friend suggested this brand because my mature cat had a lifelong issue of stomach problems. She would sometimes wretch until she brought something up, even if only bile. Rarely was it hairballs; usually it was undigested food. She’d often eat very quickly, then throw up within a few minutes. The vet found nothing wrong with her and, except for that, she seemed happy and well.

I started her on Blue Buffalo Freedom Chicken Recipe Grain-Free Indoor Mature Dry Cat Food by mixing it 50/50 with her prior dry food. She took to it right away and was eating only the Blue Buffalo within a few days. It’s been over a year, and she very rarely (maybe once a month) throws up. Her weight is stable and her coat is silkier than ever. THAT was a change I did not expect.

Blue Buffalo costs more, but it’s worth it to me not just because my cat has no more issues, but because the nutritional value in this food is the best I’ve found. This particular Blue Buffalo recipe is gluten-free and maybe that was the entire problem. If your cat has issues or you are looking for a wider selection to choose from, I would recommend going to the Blue Buffalo web site to determine which of the many recipes is right for your cat.
