We have used this tool on both our Golden Retreiver and our cat. To my surprise neither pet minded the brush at all. This thing works great, very little mess, confortable handle, solid build. This thing is meant to last. We have used other brushes in the past that just make one heck of a mess and hair is flying everywhere, but not this one. All the collected hair stays in the brush until you pull it off and put it in the trash, unlike other brands where you constantly have hair all over everything. A must buy for any pet owner. This thing will last forever.

I have two large dogs. I have tried a standard rake and the furminator to take care of their undercoat. The standard rake seems to miss a lot of the dead fur and the furminator seems to be uncomfortable for the dogs. I had been looking at the oster undercoat rake but, since this looked almost identical, I decided to order this one due to its lower price.
I think the effectiveness of this rake truly does depend on your dogs coat. I have a golden retriever/rough collie mix and an australian shepard/husky mix. This works well on my golden/collie whose coat has more of the golden qualities as far as texture goes (though with the length of the rough collie!). It was pretty impressive how much dead fur came off of him with minimal effort on my part and minimal discomfort on his. This rake doesn’t work well with my aussie/husky, though. He has very fine and downy fur from his aussie side and this just seems to get stuck and then really yanks his fur. So I would say this works pretty well on a courser coat vs a fine one.
I think it’s also important to note that you can’t take big long strokes with this rake. You will want to work small sections at a time.

BEST DESHEDDER EVER! Seriously! Three brush strokes with this got more fur out of my cat than five minutes of work with the previous brush I was using! I got so much fur out that I could have made another kitty! This brush is solidly built, easy to work with, and my long haired cat doesn’t mind it at all. It also made clean up so easy! With other brushes, I always had a furnado (fur tornado) effect going on, but with this brush all of the hair was clumped nicely together and was super easy to remove from the teeth. Best cat-grooming purchase I have made. Ever. I wish I had discovered it sooner!
