So it turns out that I was dumb or rather uninformed of how to properly use this powerful undercoat rake on my aussie/malamute mix. The first time I used it, so much fur came off. It turns out that I should NOT have used it a much as I did because once all was said and done, I had damaged some of her guard hairs in the process. The blades on this rake have little razors on them that can cut through the guard hairs while removing the undercoat. Luckily she is still quite young so her guard hairs should grow back without issue.

This rake will work great for tough tangles and mats but should be used with caution and restraint and not used for every day grooming. For an awesome rake that can be used for daily grooming, check out: Evolution Grooming Undercoat Rake with Rotating Teeth. This still picks up the undercoat but does not effect the guard hairs.

    – We have Maine Coon cats, which are famous for thier “underlayers” of fur that constantly cause a problem with matting, knotting and such. We must have every kind of brush, steel combs, matting rakes (different function), slickers, etc., but, we’ve never had a tool that removed so much hair (from underlayers), so easily ! It was really astounding…even after brushing my cat thouroughly with her steel-long-wire brush, her “fav” regular brush, and – collecting the loose hair with her “love glove”…This rake pulled out handfull after handfull of undercoat hair ! Even after grooming my Main Coons for years, I’ve never seen such a thing. And my cat did not protest this at all ! This is the best tool ever for PREVENTING those nasty hard clumps and mats that cost big money for a pro to remove. This tool will be too late at that stage, ie: it won’t break-up the thick, hard mats/clumps …most of which are quickly beyond the scope of any tool, other than clippers. But for preventing this syndrome of matting (some of which become so hard, so quickly), I have finally found the perfect tool ! Just a warning for the new user: even if you think you have your cat completely brushed and “slickered” …be prepared for FLYING HAIR when you apply this tool ! Not kidding, at all ….you will want to moisten, use a de-tangler before raking, or you’ll wind up grabbing a face mask, as I did ! 😉

This is a great tool for getting the the mats out of our Himalayan cat. Of course, he won’t come near me now since it pulled some of his hair out rather than cutting it as it was designed to do. The secret is to just take small bites of hair with the edge of the tool instead of big broad sweeping strokes with the full blade. Use just one of the edge knives to cut the clumps. Be gentle. Your cat will hate you if you aren’t. I would buy the tool again, but I doubt that I will ever need another one. No more long haired cats in this house! The cat hates combing mats out and really gets upset and likes to hide behind the sofa where I can’t get him. Splitting the mats with round nosed scissors to start with is a good idea and easier on the cat. Splitting the mats with scissors often results in clumps just coming out without combing.

UPDATE: We started buying a different dry food for our two cats. After about 6 months, it is apparent that the Himalayan cat has way less mats in his fur. It took me a little while to figure out the food has something to do with it. There has to be some research somewhere on this. Cat is 17 years old now and not a lot of time left to experiment with him.
