my cat’s thyroid level was as off the charts – 15 or so (normal i think is 1-4). he was just constantly pacing, acting a little strange, and just waking us up super early and not seeming like he was “right.”

after 3 weeks on this diet, his level was 2, and his behavoir is totally normal, and he’s chilled out big time. He’s a lovable dude, and he’s feeling way better it seems.

I just wish they’d make the wet food a little “wetter.” i have to add water to it or he won’t even eat it at all. He seems to like the dry better.

Manages thyroid levels good enough to avoid medication for now, January 12, 2014

Please understand that every pet is different and this is a prescription diet food, so a vet should be consulted prior to use. My 16+ year old cat was diagnosed a few years back with hyperthyroidism. She is extremely finicky with medicine to the point that even applying medicated ear cream turns into a battle. A few months after the initial diagnosis, we transitioned from medication to the Y/D diet (we continued medicating until the food had “built up” enough to work on its own). We had (and continue to have) her checked out every 3-6 months, depending on how she’s doing. The vet does an exam and blood work to test her thyroid levels, and we have the senior cat panel done periodically to test for liver or kidney problems, etc. So all that said, it took a while for the food to bring her levels down. I should point out that in order for the Y/D diet to work, the cat must eat ONLY the Y/D food and nothing else. Within the first 6 months or so of the new diet, she had intermittent problems with vomiting, so I mixed in Science Diet Sensitive Stomach to help her digestion – this was a no-no and is probably why her levels didn’t decline faster. Once we got strict about her eating only Y/D, her levels declined and now she is in the normal range! Her coat is shiny and soft, she is more upbeat and social than she’s been in years, she’s gained weight and is maintaining a healthy weight, and her vomiting is under control. We feed Science Diet to all of our cats and have been very happy with all of the products we’ve used.

Cat is Happier and Healthier, September 15, 2013

Our cat of +12 years was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and our vet recommended that we try this food before pills. Since we have put her on the food, she has gained over 2 pounds. Not only that, but she is so much happier and we can tell that she is feeling a lot better. Her hair is silkier and healthier and she purrs more than she has all year. We had no problem transitioning her over to this food. We feed her the dry formula most of the time, and supplement her with a spoonful of the y/d wet food once a day. The wet food has more protein from animal sources than the dry so it is better used by cats. They spent over 10 years developing this food, and it is safe for kitties to eat.
