Vine Customer Review of Free Product(What’s this?)
I had high hopes for this toy. Our cat loves to chase anything that moves- bugs in particular. He will chase little mice in strings, and even a piece of dust. This guy is into action most of the time. He is not a kitten either. He just LOVES to play with anything that moves.
When I put this toy in front of him, I did not expect the reaction I got.
WHAT IS THIS TOY LIKE? The toy has a little plastic base on it with a circle on top. This circle goes around but has a wire attached to it. On the end of the wire is a butterfly. The butterfly is made of sheet plastic. Due to a coil at the bottom of the wire, the butterfly bounces as the disc on the base goes around and around.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO OPERATE THE TOY? This toy takes 1 AAA battery which does NOT come with the toy.
HOW DID OUR CAT REACT? At first our cat jumped on the toy and tried to play with it, knocking it over. Then he pounced in it. Surely this was a hit.
Then he did something which was so odd that we sat there laughing. He began to watch the butterfly go around and around and around and his head began to go around and around until he entered into what resembled a hypnotic state. He flopped over and closed his eyes and laid there with his paw out as a half hearted attempt to act like he was active, but like he was out cold.
The next day I tried it again. He was ready to go out, but I turned on the toy. Again, he began to watch it go around and around and his head began to bob up and down and his eyes began to get heavy. He flopped over on his side and acted like he was dead for a while. His paw was extended as if he was showing that he had an intention in mind but was too sleepy to do anything about it.
After several experiences like this, I was ready to give this toy a 1 star review (unless you are into training Manchurian Candidate kitties) but then I began to notice something happening.
Our cat began to train himself how to not watch the butterfly go around but to stand there and play with it without tipping it over. He has gotten the rhythm down pretty well and like jumping rope, if you have ever seen the groups on the playground doing it, he has gotten the hang of it and is playing with it like a lost art.
THE BOTTOM LINE At first this hypnotized our cat repeatedly making us think it was a lost cause, but our cat rose to the challenge as he figured out how to play with this butterfly toy without tipping it over and making it malfunction. He likes to stand there and bat it like a ball as it goes by. When he gets tired of it, he sticks his paw forward and knocks it over and walks away. When he wants to play with it, he stands next to it and meows. It does take a few ” hypnotic” episodes before he can play though.
I wonder if there is any valuable use for a hypnotized cat..
I give this four stars but it is more like a 3 and a half. I wish the base was a bit sturdier and did not tip over quite as easily.

This toy is so awesome!! The only problem was that my 3-year-old boys kept knocking it over. We have mostly hard wood floors but we have nice rugs around. All I did was put the loop side of Velcro on the bottom and it solved the problem. I’m ordering a few more so when the toy dies get broken, from so much play, that I will have back-up.

UPDATE: I emailed the seller, complaining about the fact that the butterfly lasted 6 days before it was completely broken and gone….DEAD, PLEADING with them to start offering replacement butterflies for sale. (I searched EXTENSIVELY online….NOTHING.) I got a very nice reply back, which I wasn’t expecting, saying that if I’d send them the receipt, they’d send me a new toy. I did so, but again stressed that they should sell replacement butterflies since simply replacing the toy (which wasn’t broken…only the butterfly) isn’t going to address the problem. They did not acknowledge the butterfly problem at all, never even mentioned the word butterfly, but I did get a new toy. Buster has only gotten to play with it once, for a short time, because I know the butterfly won’t last and I doubt I’m going to get another new toy when this one dies. Very unfortunate that the company doesn’t acknowledge the problem and start selling replacement butterflies! If they would, they’d have the perfect cat toy as far as our Buster is concerned. (MAYBE, if they’d get a lot more customer complaints, have to send out a lot more replacements toys, they’d decide that selling replacement butterflies would be the more economical choice. For example, they could sell 3 butterflies to a pkg for 1/2 the price of the complete toy, keep the customer happy (at least I’d be satisfied with that) and still make money on the replacements, I’m sure. Those butterflies have to be super inexpensive to make in the large quantities they’d be looking at! To me, that sounds like a Win/Win for them and their customers.)
ORIGINAL REVIEW: We’ve spent many dollars on cat toys, most of them wind up being flops as far as holding cat’s attention, many are flops right out of the box, but this guy is a HUGE hit! Our cat absolutely LOVES his butterfly and hasn’t tired of it yet. I always take it away and put it up before he gets tired of it and walks away , trying to keep it “fresh”. The non-annoying fluttering sound it makes seems to add to the enjoyment. It does sound rather like a big bug flying about. I don’t know how we’ll ever find another toy to compete! However, I am deducting two stars for the fragility of the butterfly, which maybe can’t be helped. In order for it to fly around in circles on an extremely light wire and one small battery for any length of time, it has to be made of super light material, but the poor little guy was maimed after the first day, dead after a week. I’ve tried taping some of the pcs on, they don’t stay. I’ve attached light-weight feathers, they don’t interest our cat like the butterfly did. I wish they sold replacement butterflies but they don’t. So, even with a relatively reasonable $10 price tag for the unit, the fragility of the butterfly and no replacement available means buying the whole thing over and over if your cat really loves it, making this toy more expensive than it seems at first, and that’s not counting the batteries. Also, as others have mentioned, the base is so small and light weight, it’s useless, and you’re going to have to come up with some kind of modification to keep it upright. We had a 10″ plastic wall clock that quit working a few days ago and was still laying around, took the unit off the back of the clock, the clear cover and numbered face off the front and taped the base of the toy to the round plastic frame of the clock, which works perfectly. The battery life is better than I thought it would be with only one AAA battery powering it, but you better stock up. If your kitty loves its butterfly as much as Buster loves his, you’ll need a bunch…..unless, of course, your cat really goes after the little butterfly, in which case it’ll be dead in a week, and you won’t have to worry about batteries.
