Messy at first but does work, December 19, 2010

I got this product after much thought and research for my 7 year old European Burmese who tends to be restless and anxiety prone. In the past he has also had problems with aggression toward another cat in my home and spraying.

He has been on 5 mg of Prozac for the past 3 years and each time I have tried to wean him off the Prozac his noisy, restless behavior comes back within a week or two.

I am a veterinary nurse at a feline exclusive hospital and our veterinarians are recommending these NurtureCALM Pheromone Collars for cats with anxiety and behavior issues. The feedback so far has been very encouraging. It is my hope that with the help of the NurtureCALM collar my cat will be able to be weaned off Prozac.

There are several things that I don’t like about the collar. It is made of a very stiff plastic like material that tends to crack and break easily. In fact the collar that I purchased was cracked in several places and the buckle was about to break off.

I ended up having to return the collar for a replacement. This was discouraging considering the high cost of the collar. The other big problem with the collar is that it is covered with a messy, flaky white substance. Apparently this is what “holds” the pheromone.

I was very concerned that it would have an unpleasant odor but it does not. The flaky white stuff is messy but I am hoping that in time it will be less so. Also, keep in mind that the collars only last about 60 days.

My cat has worn the calming collar now for about 4 weeks and I can see that it has made a huge difference in his restless behavior without making him dull. I am now giving him his Prozac every other day and he is doing well.

The flaky white stuff quickly dissapated, so it ended up not being a problem. I will continue to purchase this product and very much recommend it to cat owners who are experiencing behavior issues.

Collar is NOT breakaway!, December 2, 2014

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: NurtureCALM 24/7 Feline Calming Pheromone Collar (Upto 15″ Neck) (Misc.)
These collars do not break away like they are supposed to, and my cat nearly died because of it. After wearing it for a month – with really no noticeable behavior change, the inappropriate peeing didn’t stop – he had climbed on top of the refrigerator as he liked to do, and my wife yelled at him to get down, as she likes to do. But this time, when he jumped down, somehow the collar got hung on the cabinet door knob and the poor guy basically hung himself. This is a very large, almost 20 lb cat, and the collar did not break. I wasn’t home, and if my neighbor had not by the grace of God been visiting, my cat would now be dead. Luckily, my neighbor is a doctor and he actually gave my cat CPR and got him breathing again. We then took him to the vet who checked him out and gave him some steriods, muscle relaxers, and pain injections for his neck and sent him home. Thank God he is doing ok, but no thanks to Nurture Calm for selling collars that don’t break away like they’re supposed to. I will never buy another one and I will warn anyone who will listen that they put the lives of their pets at risk if they use these collars. As I said, my cat is very large and the collar didn’t break when he jumped off a refrigerator and snagged it, so it’s not going to break under much of any kind of impact. I have attached a picture of the result if anyone wants to see.

Worked on black bart -the king of inappropriate peeing, September 14, 2011
    By
    Bij (South by south) –

Bart is about 12 years old now and has had inappropriate peeing issues for most of his life. We have had endless tests at the vet and the general opinion is that it is behavioral. Two years ago I finally put him on prozac because I just couldn’t take it anymore. I also adopted a few other strategies such as confining him to the upstairs of our house (instead of allowing him to roam the entire house), locking him in cage when I go out for prolonged periods and using pherome sprays. Adopting the multiple responses has for the most part worked. Instead of cleaning up 2 or 3 pee’s a day I now may see one a week. But I decided to use the collar as an adjunctive to all the other stuff to see if we could achieve even better results. And we have. He has stopped peeing everywhere and is using his box regularly. The pherome’s on the collar seem to keep him incredibly calm. Are there drawbacks? Yes. It’s costly -each collar only last about 1 month so you have to replace it regularly and it isn’t cheap. But for me -not having to worry about whether or not I am going to have to go on another pee hunt is worth it. Also the collar is plastic and not very pliant. But I expect this has to do with how the pheromes are deployed. The white chalky substance is a bit overwhelming when you get the collar out of the packaging but it disappears very quickly. I would recommend this product to anyone in my boat. That said I am not to sure (after reading all of the reviews) that it is appropriate for all behavioral problems.
