These have worked very well for me – – not a dead or injured bird since I started using them! The sound of a collar-bell means nothing to birds. I had no less than three bells on each of my cats’ collars and I was still finding injured or dead birds on the porch all the time. Birds are extremely visual and have many more color cones in their eyes than humans do; they see color and iridescence brilliantly (the edging around the collar cover is iridescent) – – that’s why these work. The minute I let my little destructo-monkeys out with these on, you can hear the birds send up the warning chorus! As an added bonus, my guys look so cute with these over their breakaway collars (I call them my Klown Kitties). Unlike the shields, these are very unobtrusive and my cats truly don’t seem to mind them. A few times a year when these need a wash, I put them in a lingerie washing bag and wash them right in with a regular load of clothes (bright-colored batch) and then pop them into a medium-heat dryer; they come out just fine. I cannot recommend this product highly enough.

I was really hopeful, but within minutes of donning the bird b safe collar and going outside our car returned with a bird. Eithe he is a hunting savant, or it doesn’t work as well as it is supposed to.
So after a trip to Michaels to purchase bells, to add to the collar, we’re ready to try again. If he wants to go out he’s going to have to look like the neighborhood jester.

We live in the country and have a small farm that attracts a lot of wildlife. We also have 5 cats that have wandered into our lives (we used to trap and fix 10-feral cats a year and some, despite being forever altered, stayed around.) The kill rate at our house is high – so high that the owls that used to hunt on our 5 acre property no longer have anything to hunt. Cats are not environmentally friendly beings.
These collars work very well. The bird kill rate at our house is down greatly. The collars will not work very well in May and June – fledgling season. Fledglings stay on the ground for a couple of days while they learn to fly and it’s impossible to keep them out of harm’s way. They’re doomed.
We have to wash these collars once a week and replace them every three months when they are inevitably lost. I tried to save some money and sew some myself (five cats, y’all) but they were not as effective or as attractive.
If you want a completely 100% effective way of keeping your cats from killing birds, keep your cats indoors. If you want to reduce the harm that your cats have on the environment, get these. You have no idea how many birds cats kill, they only bring home a small percentage of their take. By utilizing these collars, you will be having a lasting effect on wildlife without knowing it.
Five-cat pro tip: Get adjustable break-away collars. Adjust them to be snug enough to allow for a finger to fit under the collar, not too snug as to wear down the fur or choke the cat, but snugger than if you were simply putting on a collar. Check the cat’s fur after a week, if there is wear on the fur, loosen the collar a smidge.
Bonus: Cranky orchardists will laugh hysterically at you, your cats and your general direction when you employ the Birdsbesafe collar. Make someone’s day, save a winged life, get these. Wish I could buy in bulk.
