    Great toy-worth the money, January 25, 2009

I had recently read an article about aleviating boredom in cats and this product was mentioned so I decided to get one for my young male cat Toby. He played with it almost immediately & rarely walks by it without stopping to send the ball rolling. I have it laid out in a wavy line and it is fun to watch him stalk the ball as it passes the openings. The design is unique as the end pieces are slightly elavated so the ball hits the end & is sent back the other way.

    sturdy & fun, September 21, 2009

    K. Smith’s review is spot on. This is a reconfigurable tube with holes. Inside the tube is a ball. The cat puts its paw through a hole and pushes the ball, which goes rolling up and down or around the track. The ball makes a soft noise as it rolls. Some other cat balls can be fit inside. The best we’ve found so far is plastic balls with jingle bells inside; these are too fragile normally (they get stepped on and break) but very appealing inside this tube. We’ve also left cat treats, toy mice, and ribbons inside.

The tube is very sturdy, up to the riggors of having a cat pick it up and chew on it, etc. Our cats are more likely to play with it if you change the configuration often. Also, this was not obviously a toy to them until we trained them. That is, for the first week we left it in front of the TV, and my daughter or I would play with the ball as we wanted the cat to do. We also pulled their string through it, and sprinkled catnip inside. The cats would watch and chase the string. After a week they got the idea and would play sometimes on their own — just one push to begin with. It is best appreciated late at night when we are not there to observe the cat. My daughter has it in her room, now, as an attractive lure and entertainment for the cat — she hears the ball rolling at night sometimes, and so knows the cat is playing. This works very well as a child/cat toy, because the cat likes when she changes or moves it.

9-months later: our younger cat died of cancer, and we since adopted a kitten. The kitten figured out how to play with this toy after being shown twice (i.e., we pushed the ball twice — that’s it!) Our new kitten adores this toy, and will sometimes play with it for 20 minutes straight. The older cat acts as a foster mom to kitten, and uses all of her play-energy on the kitten, so I can’t comment on its extended appeal to an older cat. The sturdy construction continues to impress me. The ball never pops out & gets lost.

I have three other round type ball toys, one has a mouse that goes around, one flashes in the dark and one is just balls in holes. My cat looked at them once and never looked again. My cat just turned 3 yr lost his two much older aunts and was bored. I didn’t want another cat but felt guilty because I am gone all day. He has played with this toy more than 3 times each day, some times for 30-40 min for more than 4 months. I really can’t believe it as he only has one other toy he plays with on his own. He stalks the ball, lays on his back to hit it, watches it to see if it moves etc. Even the squirrel in the window doesn’t interest him as much. I do think all cats are different but I am buying him add-ons today for his birthday. I am truly amazed and the cost here is sooo much cheaper than the pet store.

This review is from: Ethical Thin Colorful Springs Cat Toy, 10-Pack (Misc.)
I do not recommend these thin springs at all especially for kittens in particular. My 12 week old kitten started to lose weight and failing to thrive when he was always the largest and strongest of a litter I am fostering. A barium study revealed 5 broken pieces of these springs in his GI tract which will now have to be removed either endoscopically or by surgery if the pieces migrated to his intestines. This would have killed him and/or caused perforation if not caught in time. I can’t tell you how much I regret buying these toys. These kittens were carefully supervised for a month during playing before the one kitten ingested them a few days ago.

    UPDATE:
My kitten is doing great now and we were lucky the pieces did not move beyond his stomach. I wanted to clarify that my kitten swallowed pieces of the Ethical WIDE Colorful Springs Cat Toy and Ethical THIN Colorful Springs Cat Toy which were both plastic. The thin and narrow version is brittle and do not coil and spring back like the wide version. They also broke easily. Despite the breakage, I don’t believe my older cats would have ingested the pieces like my kittens. However, I do not want to take a chance moving forward with the wide coils either and wanted other pet owners to be aware of the potential danger.

I also purchased these for my cats, and they did start to break. As soon as I saw my cats start to put the pieces in their mouths, I threw them all away. My vet bills are high enough (I run a shelter for special needs cats). If you can’t watch your cats while they play with these, DO NOT buy them.

Fun but potentially unsafe for the cats, July 23, 2009

My cats both love spring toys that I’ve purchased a pet store that’s pretty far away from my house, so I figured I’d try these out as the image looks exactly the same as the ones they have. The product looks pretty different, and is a thinner gauge of plastic that seemed more flexible and possibly still fun for them.
They both definitely had fun with the toys, but within a few minutes of not too rough play, the springs started to break apart and the cats started to try to eat the pieces. Luckily I was supervising them (as with any new toy), and was able to get the pieces away from them.
Definitely fun for most cats, but I’m very concerned about the safety of this product. Please supervise your animal if you do choose to try these.
